The Scars That Shape Us… Part II

May 6, 2020 | Sports Friends International

On October 22, 2019, we shared a bit of Dan and Corrie’s story and how, through their own set of trials, Dan and Corrie have reaped a joy that they could never have produced on their own. They have seen how easy it is in the comfort of the Western world to forget about God and push Him to one side. They shared that it is only when our self-sufficiency is peeled away that we see how weak we really are.

Here’s an update a few months after that post went out…

As C.S. Lewis so beautifully put it, “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

In sickness and health. For better or for worse. As a couple we uttered those words with big, naive smiles on our faces as we started our lives together on June 15, 1996. It has always been our desire for God to be glorified through our marriage and through our family. And God continues to be glorified in sickness and in health, for better and for worse.

We’ve walked through some tough times and have always seen God provide and show Himself. Saturday afternoon, November 9, was another one of those days.

God protected our family from harm and saved our house from being totally lost. A fire started in our chimney and quickly spread to our roof and would’ve quickly spread to the rest of the house. From the time Corrie called 911 to the time the fire was contained was 15 minutes. Any longer and we may have completely lost our house. Praise God for a wonderful fire department!

We’re guessing the earliest the house will be ready is May. As we wait, God has us in a beautiful home. We have been blessed to be staying in the house of friends of friends. They were gracious to take their house off the market so we could stay in it and will re-list it once we are able to move out.

God once again is providing in very tangible ways and reminding us of His personal and faithful provision and care. While it’s been another time of living in uncertain transition, we are once again so well provided for and blessed in so many ways. We are so thankful for what God continues to show us and our boys through uncertainty and His faithful hand to provide in ways we never could for ourselves.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” (James 1:2-3)
