Meet Coach Flora

Apr 30, 2026 | Sports Friends Malawi

Six years ago, few people would have imagined that Flora would one day be leading a growing sports ministry—guiding young people, teaching Scripture, and pointing others to Christ. But God was at work.

Coach Flora’s journey is a powerful reminder that building people is central to advancing God’s Kingdom. Her story shows how intentional discipleship, patient mentorship, and faithful investment can transform a life—and sustain ministry long after one leader steps away.

The Early Years

Flora joined a church-centered netball team in Zomba, Malawi, under the leadership of Coach Milium. Though officially part of the team, her commitment was inconsistent. Her relationship with Christ was still developing, and at times she became involved in conflict within the community. Some people saw her as a source of trouble rather than a future leader.

From the outside, she didn’t look like an obvious ministry success story.

Not Giving Up

Yet Coach Milium did not give up on her.

Whenever Flora attended training sessions, Coach Milium chose to invest in her intentionally. They read Scripture together. They prayed. They talked honestly about life and faith. Again and again, Coach Milium spoke words of encouragement, reminding Flora of her worth, her God‑given potential, and the leadership she believed God had placed within her—even before it was visible to others.

This steady, faithful discipleship—combined with the work of the Holy Spirit—sparked a slow but deep transformation.

Over time, Flora grew spiritually and personally. She became dependable, trustworthy, and increasingly respected by both her coach and her community. Through ongoing mentorship, counseling, prayer, and practical leadership opportunities, Coach Milium intentionally prepared her to lead from within the team.

Learning to Lead

That investment soon became evident. Flora was appointed Assistant Coach, and for a season, she and Coach Milium led the ministry side by side. Their partnership modeled healthy shared leadership and demonstrated the importance of intentional succession—preparing someone to carry the vision forward rather than starting from scratch.

Stepping Forward

When Coach Milium later relocated to South Africa for employment, Flora stepped fully into the role of Coach.

What followed was deeply encouraging. Under Coach Flora’s leadership, the ministry not only continued—it expanded. She has helped establish sports ministries in three sister churches, where new teams are growing and young people are consistently engaging. Even more significantly, many of these young people are coming to faith in Christ, showing the powerful impact of sports ministry when discipleship remains central.

A Lasting Impact

During the April 2026 fasting and prayer programme, Coach Flora led the entire gathering. Her local pastor publicly affirmed how God is using her leadership to bless both the church and the community.

We were personally present and deeply encouraged to witness firsthand the fruit of long‑term investment in one life. It powerfully affirmed this truth: when we invest faithfully in people with the gospel, the impact multiplies far beyond our presence. Even in Coach Milium’s physical absence, the ministry remains strong. This continuity reflects sustainable leadership development and serves as a compelling example for other coaches across Sports Friends Malawi.

Pray With Us

Pray for Coach Flora—that she would continue to walk in humility, rely on the Holy Spirit, and faithfully lead others to Christ.
